I have favorite trails per season to hike at in the Shawnee National Forest and Southern Illinois.

My favorite trail during the spring season is the River to River Trail section between Bowman Bottoms Road and Tunnel Hill State Trail. There are so many daffodils in that area to see blooming in the spring. It’s an out-and-back trail, and the best place to park is by the Odum Tract EA sign off Bowman Bottoms Road.

My favorite trail during the summer season is Trail 049, which I call the long way to Jackson Falls. You’ll see Millstone Lake, Jackson Falls, Jackson Hollow, and different views of the Shawnee in one 10-mile loop.

My favorite trail during the fall season is Blackjack Oak at Ferne Clyffe State Park. It has a few overlooks that have some of the prettiest views of southern Illinois for fall colors.

My favorite trail during the winter season is Jackson Hole, precisely when the waterfalls are frozen over. It’s incredible to see, but it can be hard to get to by vehicle and foot.
