Hiking Tip of the Day: Use Permethrin
You should use permethrin to help prevent tick bites.
Permethrin is a strong chemical insecticide used to reduce exposure to ticks and mosquitoes in humans and dogs.
You should not use permethrin on your skin. It can cause issues for humans if used on the skin or breathed in, but typically the issues are minor and clear up in about a day. Keep the chemical away from children and pets. Use permethrin outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
The best way to use permethrin is to spray it on your hiking footwear, backpack, and clothing. Do not spray it on synthetic clothing like spandex or polyester, as it can damage those materials.
Let the gear you spray sit for about 24 hours before use.
The chemical is strong enough to stay on clothing and gear through several wash cycles.
A lot of people use permethrin to prevent tick bites.
Most public land management agencies use it.
Hunters use it.
Hikers use it.
It works and is one of the best lines of defense against ticks.
But permethrin isn’t 100%. So be to check yourself for ticks after your hike.
Use permethrin.

If you would be so kind enough to support my efforts, you can do so by sharing this post with others, especially on social media. Be sure to subscribe to my YouTube Channel to see my latest videos, shorts and live streams. Follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok for unique content that you will only find on those pages. You might also join my Southern Illinois Hiking & Outdoor Resources Group on Facebook, too!
You can also support me by becoming a Patreon Supporter for as little as $3/month and you can cancel anytime (no contracts or catches). Patreons get access to extra features, exclusive articles, sticker packs, gifts and more. Consider buying official Hiking with Shawn Merchandise as another way to support me. I spend a lot of money on Hiking with Shawn and because of extremely high public land permit fees, I make very little money in return so everything helps.
Thanks again for checking out another one of my articles and until next time, I’ll see you on the trail!
